What is Botchamania?
Botchamania is a video series that highlights wrestling mistakes, bloopers, errors and shite moments. There’s also running jokes and silly little endings too.
When/how did Botchamania start?
The first three Botchamania videos weren’t created by Maffew (this is Maffew typing, by the way). The first two were created pre-YouTube by KiKrusher99 & Jon Barber (Barber’s currently a referee for Chikara). Botchamania 3 was made by JoeyNightHeat from the old Wrestlecrap forums. Because of the different names and styles I assumed anybody could have a ride on the Botchamania bicycle so I made the fourth video because the third one was so shitty it made me take up video editing. I had enough material left over to make a fifth one, then a sixth one and so on and WOOSH here we are.
So yes, I didn’t come up with the name or concept of Botchamania. If I’d have known in 2007 I’d still be making them years later I’d have had the sense to change the name to something else. My contribution was the video game music, daft jokes, constant Simpsons/Goldeneye, wrestler intros and basically everything that’s not ”wrestlers fucking up to music.” I never spoke to Barber/Krusher/Heat at the time and Barber only recently told me he was the guy that helped make the first two. I’ve no way of proving if he did or he didn’t but he can claim ownership if he wants, I don’t care I didn’t make the first three.
What’s the easiest way to watch Botchamania?
YouTube accounts keep on getting removed and switched so I upload on Vimeo & Dailymotion too. Vimeo sadly has the same issues as YouTube but Dailymotion is invincible. I’ve only had one account with them and it’s right here. Vimeo account is here.
Why do you go through so many YouTube accounts?
The whole ”I don’t own any of the footage I’m using” thing. I don’t complain much, I mean it is *their* footage after all.
How many YouTube accounts you been through?
Fucking loads. My strategy is ”get two copyright warnings, set up new account” as three strikes means a channel deletion. Doesn’t always work but YouTube keeps on changing how they deal with copyrighted material so I’m making this up as I go along.
Rough list of YouTube accounts (nearly all dead):
And some more with increasingly more awful names. the er ”maffewfucksmen” one was designed to look like a troll account as a bunch of them popped up around the time, with names like ”maffevv” and ”m&ffew”. It worked too well as friends sent me angry messages thinking I was some dick. A lot of people didn’t feel like subscribing to a name like that (duh) but my stupid idea was justified as it’s still on YouTube!
Oh and while I’m here, there’s several accounts on YouTube which re-upload my videos. I have absolutely no issue with this and encourage it, I’m happy people make it easier for others to watch the damn things. But I do need to let people know that accounts like BotchaMan aren’t me, but type like they are. ”hey it’s me maffew” type stuff. I mean, if that’s the price I have to pay for someone to re-upload something then fair enough, I’ll put up with their Stephen King’s Misery levels of creepiness. I’m worried one day BotchaMan or FightOwensFight or any of the other faceless fans will start typing about WHITE POWER or something and that’ll be the end of me.
Why the double-frame/windowed videos?
Again, copyright issues. YouTube automatically detects things like logos and icons on a video so if you move the frame to the corner, it doesn’t detect it. I use windowed (or whatever term you want to use for ”shove the video into the corner”) for YouTube and full-screen for Dailymotion and Vimeo. The double-framing is by the crazy-stalker fans as mentioned above, who presumably never look at the comments in the videos because it’s full of people saying ”I hate this can you please stop the double-frame?”
Why do the re-upload crazies have more hits and subscribers than your own YouTube accounts?
They figured out the background/framing thing before me so they had a head start. Plus they have normal-sounding account names rather than stupid botch puns.
Why the video game music?
I’ve always enjoyed listening to them and around 2007 every wrestling music video were the same nu-metal songs with vague wrestling connections: My Sacrifice, Down With The Sicknesss (YAMUTHAGETUP), Bodies etc. I was getting into cover bands like The Minibosses, Armcannon and others so it made sense to me because HEY it’s YouTube. You can make whatever you want. Reaction nowadays is positive but at the start it was ”what is this bleep-bloop shit?” On the plus side, it rarely gets pulled up for copyright issues on YouTube so there’s that.
What’s the font you use?
It’s called Earthworm Jim and you can download it here.
What is the source of the “huh?” soundbite?
Predator, the arm-wrestling scene at the start. Huh?
What’s the whole JEZZZZZUSSSS thing?
In 2001, CZW founder Zandig got beat up by the H8 Club and gave an impassioned promo about it.
Fast-forward a few years and I’m using CZW footage in the videos because I enjoy their wrestling (side-note: as much as CZW is the punch-line for many people’s jokes, they’ve had many great moments and matches and were shit-hot in 2005 and 2012). One day CZW hires a firm to take down their copyrighted material on YouTube. They do their job and one of the Botchamania videos gets taken down. People tweet and message DJ Hyde (current CZW owner) and tell him he’s a bad person so DJ apologises to me for the confusion and lets me use the footage. What a situation, it’s HIS footage and he apologies to ME. I decided to make a joke about it and reference the Conan O’Brien Walker Texas Ranger lever (here’s a video) and added the JEZZZZZUSSSSS sound-bite to the lever because I thought it was funny. It’s now a running joke and people still shout JEEEEZZZZZUUUSSS at me at conventions. Thanks DJ!
(side-note: Zandig used to hate being reminded of the JEEEEZZZZUUUSSS promo and called it one of the most embarrassing things of his career. He’s warmed up to it now though:
Any companies don’t want you to use their footage?
It’s a weird thing as you’d assume all companies would not want their footage used, but nothing attracts crazies like wrestling so plenty of them have told me ”yeah go nuts, we love it.” However, Ring of Honour and EVOLVE are two companies that directly asked to not be featured. ROH sent their YouTube guy (Eric Santamaria from Wrestling Roundtable) when Botchamania was just taking off and told me they would usually take down the videos with no message but he liked the videos so he said if I took down the existing videos with ROH footage and re-edit them he’d send me some ROH DVDs. I agreed (selling out for the first time), sold the DVDs on eBay and used the money to pay the gas bill that month. Thanks ROH!
Gabe Sapolsky asked in a Q ‘n’ A that he’d appreciate the footage not being used and I respect that. If any wrestlers or companies don’t want me using their footage all they need to do is ask, I’m not here to ruin anyone’s reputation. The worst thing about Botchamania is some fans watch a heavily-edited video and think that all certain wrestlers do is fuck up so I understand how some companies wouldn’t appreciate the ”exposure.” Gabe was kind enough to let me use the Holy Shit Everything Went Wrong Oh God ending to the EVOLVE tag match that happened at Wrestlemania weekend this year. Thanks Gabe!
Any heat with wrestlers over Botchamania?
Weirdly, most wrestlers seem to see Botchamania as an unavoidable thing because it’s been going for so long so it’s like complaining about the rain. I’m sure there’s tons of wrestlers that would love to beat the shit out of me, but no wrestlers have threatened to do it and meant it yet. My assumption is beating up someone with a mild online following wouldn’t help their career much now we’re living in the social media everything-is-recorded age. That or wrestlers have enough to worry about with exercising, tanning, making shows, setting up rings, selling merch and all the other hassle wrestlers have to do without worrying about a video series.
I get random hate from wrestlers I’ve not heard of and then I google them to find out they’re wrestling in bars. No offence but when the likes of Kevin Owens & Mark Dallas are saying nice things about you, you tend not to give much of a fuck about what Jimmy Kickpads With Six Months Training thinks.
The answer I always give to the ”wrestlers vs. Botchamania” question is Joe Gacy. I had the pleasure of going to the last CZW show at the old ECW Arena in 2012 and got to shake hands and be nice with some of the wrestlers beforehand. Gacy wasn’t impressed with seeing wrestlers fan-boy over me (legit, one wrestler saw me across the room and went ”MAFFEW!” and ran for a hug) and one day decided to take to Twitter to voice his concerns. Here’s some highlights:
It probably didn’t help that I called him the worst CZW wrestler of the year 2012 because he went from Ryan Slater’s tag partner to challenging for the World Title in the space of three shows. To give him credit, Gacy’s improved a ton since then and had the CZW feud of the year 2015 with Tim Donst. Plus anybody that can get a reaction out of the CZW crowd is OK with me. If I was a wrestler I’d hate me.
Teddy Long isn’t a fan. I love Teddy but I have no idea why a 68-year old mega-veteran would even try to watch Botchamania. I don’t like spicy foods so I don’t eat chilli.
Wrestlers have blocked me on Twitter but it’s from vanity-searching so fuck that. I have no idea why anyone would vanity search and then get mad when they find negative things. Buh Buh tore me out one time, but I take it as a compliment (and read it in his voice).
Why “cheese souffle” in the tags?
That’s an old, stupid thing from GameFAQs that was used as a way of finding wrestling videos, when you needed to sneak it onto video sites. It’s redundant now, but I still put it in the video tags because I’m still old and stupid.
What do you use for your editing?
Corel Videostudio. It was the first one I bought, it’s not broken so I’ve stuck with it. It’s easier to use for this type of video-making than something like Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas.
