WCW World title: Sting v. Hulk Hogan (Halloween Havoc 1999)

As long as wrestling exists, people will try and figure out what WCW were thinking with actions such as this. Halloween Havoc 1999 was the first WCW PPV Russo had control of, and one thing he loves more than annoying accents is the ‘worked shoot’, where something is made to look like a shoot (i.e. ”real”) but isn’t. CM Punk in 2011 has shown that worked shoots can be used correctly, as long as it’s used sparingly and the crowd can get behind the wrestler as long as what the wrestler is saying connects with some of the audience. In WCW however, shit like this would happen on a regular basis because Russo thought that wrestling fans wouldn’t like wrestling and would prefer their wrestling not wrestling-y at all. Without going into how hilarious it is that two of the company’s biggest stars (and their World Champion!) had to go along with the match above on a PPV THAT PEOPLE PAID FOR, it’s mostly insulting because of how not-entertaining it is.

Sting would wrestle Goldberg in an unadvertised main event where he would lose the title to Goldberg…only for Bill to be stripped of the title because it wasn’t an official match and a tournament to be held to declare the next world champion. I don’t know what angles Hogan was involved in after this but at a guess I’d say he probably said ”brother” a lot.

Vince Russo is still employed.
