WWF decided to run in the huge Hiran Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico  on October 19, 1985. It wasn’t a great way to start the evening…and then the storm kicked in.

A tiny 1,200 fans showed up to the giant stadium, probably because the weather schedule wasn’t set for anything good. Mid-way through Hogan/Studd, the rainstorm starts and well…it isn’t pretty.

Worth a cheap laugh, if nothing else. Poor Gorilla Monsoon has to commentate and announce by himself. WWE keeps on tempting fate by having outdoor venues for Wrestlemania and manages to get away with it.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Hiran Bithorn Stadium – October 19, 1985 (1,200)

Tony Atlas vs. Steve Lombardi
Cpl. Kirchner vs. Tiger Chung Lee
Ricky Steamboat vs. Moondog Spot
Women’s Champion Wendi Richter (w/ Cyndi Lauper) vs. the Spider Lady (w/ the Fabulous Moolah)
World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Big John Studd
B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & Barry O
IC Champion Tito Santana vs. Randy Savage

…for that Kobe Bryant joke (and then using #VoteForLinda as a hashtag on Twitter, apparently) Meanwhile… Shame really. The idea of a manager having a microphone during matches is a good one, sadly it went to a guy who couldn’t

I watched Raw for a bit, got bored and decided to read the report when I get it instead (which I’ll post along with last week’s, which I er forgot to post). Here’s something better in the mean time.

Monsoon is right, geez. I would have hated to be at that show

  • MANnY

McMahon done sold his soul to the devil. That’s why WM don’t get all rained out.

  • TPlush

How old is this video? I noticed Beniot in the list of May birthdays.

    • The Coach

Did you notice the WWE 24/7 Logo in the upper right corner?

  • Samuel

Re: WM it helps that they have a giant bloody covering/screens/cells/etc. above it. And also that its in places like Miami instead of Colchester.

    • Scott

Yeah, unless you got some bad wind with the rain and what not, there should be no problems other than the people sitting in the stands having soggy signs and wet chairs, and the pyrotechnics would be, at least at the stage, be out of the question

Next year is in New Jersey. Around that time of year you could still theoretically get a freak blizzard rolling through.

      • Scott

Yeah. This year, it was perfect in the Northeast, and they could have EASILY pulled off a Wrestlemania at the Meadowlands. April weather though is just so screwy, one year, early April can be like an early June, the next year, like you said, you could have a freak blizzard, or very cold, raw, rainy weather making an appearance.

Reminds me of a show in Austria, only the promoter decided to remove the middle rope to give a clearer shot for video.

Why didn’t they just cancel the show? Would the money lost be worth the damage done to the equipment, wrestlers, and stage hands? Were they afraid it would hurt their image? It’s crazy.

  • Mr. McMahon

Yeah, by committing to stadium shows for Wrestlemanias they really limited themselves to where they can perform for that time of year. Banking on global warming? They should take it overseas, but they’re afraid the results will be on the internet and it will stop people from buying it.

It’s only been 3 times since 1994, though, that they’ve held the show in a full-outdoor venue, so worrying about weather for pyro/fan comfort/cable hazards is less of an issue than one might think.

I’m more surprised they’ve never run Mania at the Superdome in New Orleans. It’s hosted pretty much every big event one can think of, the city has more hotel rooms for its size than any city in the States with the possible exception of Vegas, and what fan wouldn’t like the idea of a weekend of pro-graps, nice weather, like-minded people, and cheap, readily-available adult beverages?

Actually, it was supposed to T-Storm on April 1st, but it decided to rain the day before instead.

Honestly we could have done with a little rain, I went early to beat traffic and to check out the merch tables.

Sadly, there were no Mark Henry shirts available anywhere :(

Wow, the slingshot spot in the Wendi Richter/Spider Lady match was just awesome.

There should be a drinking game for how many times Monsoon said “treacherous”.

Gotta love the fans using their chairs as umbrellas.

Also, the rainfall saved the Hogan/Studd match. It was pretty dull before then.

  • Cheezymadman

    Monsoon in a Monsoon? Nice.

  • Adam Curry

That Macho Man match is officially the worst match I’ve ever seen. Fucking embarrassing… this is one match that deserves the dreaded -***** rating

  • HANSENKID

only 1,200 showed up because if im not mistaken Carlos Colon ran a hell of a show that same weekend.

One of the reasons WrestleMania will never be held at Wembley. Knowing the Great British Weather it’d piss it down
