It’s Wrestlemania season, meaning WWE’s replaying all the clips you’ve seen again and again (HOGAN SLAMMING ANDRE, HBK ABSEILING, DONALD TRUMP CALLING BOBBY LASHLEY ”A BLACK GENTLEMAN”) so let’s go the other way and look at some of the best (worst?) botched match endings at a Wrestlemania. Because it’s only Wrestlemania, no pressure.

Ariston Advert Music

Bobo’s Roost by Kozue Ishikawa (Wario Land 2)

Time Is Running Out by Muse

How I Feel by Flo Rida

1. Hulk Hogan vs. Sid Justice (Wrestlemania VIII)

2. Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle (Wrestlemania XIX)

3. Hardcore Battle Royal (Wrestlemania 2000)

4. Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund (Wrestlemania XI)

5. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus (Wrestlemania XXII)

6. The Fabulous Moolah vs. Velvet Mcintrye (Wrestlemania II)

7. Fandango vs. Chris Jericho (Wrestlemania XXIX)

8. Tito Santana vs. Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania VIII)

9. Money In The Bank (Wrestlemania XXVI)

10. Kurt Angle vs. Kane (Wrestlemania X8)

Dishonourable Mentions…

The Undertaker vs. Jimmy Snuka (Wrestlemania VII)

Dino Bravo vs. Texas Tornado (Wrestlemania VII)

Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XI)

I was going to have Lesnar vs. Angle as number one, but they actually managed to finish the match as planned (somehow). Plus it was a clean finish. Even if Wrestlemania VIII’s ending had worked out as planned, it still meant a DISQUALIFICATION ENDING FOR THE MAIN EVENT OF WRESTLEMANIA. Plus, Sid left immediately afterwards. And the rumours of Ultimate Warrior being played by Kerry Von Erich started because of how different Warrior looked during his appearance. We never got Sid vs. Warrior, sadly. Or Sid vs. Kerry Von Erich. Those would have been some great promos.

Miz vs. Cena was going to get a mention but due to Miz getting a concussion in the match and the slight backlash I got from including Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker match in a previous vid, concussions are a no-go. Yes, even if it’s The Miz.

Hey remember when Fandango pinned Jericho?

I admit, I don’t have a source on Sherri forgetting to hold down Michaels’ leg for the finish, but given how weird the finish looked and Santana immediately popping up, I’m going to take an educated guess.

The Velvet Mcintrye match hasn’t been officially confirmed anywhere, as far as I know. *something* happened, anyway.

In Titan Sinking, Bret Hart called the Backlund match his worst singles PPV match ever.

”Whattya say???”

  • JD

Forgive me if I am wrong but wasn’t it Cena who got the concussion?

    • MaffewOfBotchamania

I thought it was The Miz who got it after bonking his head on the concrete?

      • JD

I’m certain it was. (Different JD here).

      • JD

Yeah I just checked, It was Miz, Jesus his wrestling is so bad I didn’t even think he was knocked loopy.

        • jan otto

They both had them. Cena hit his head on the buckle very early in the match and Miz killed himself on the floor by not tucking his chin.

  • Codster9

    Bob Backlund: “WAAAUUUGGGHHH!!!

    • Catherine Bouey

      Make em say “WAAAUUUGGGHHHH Na-Na-Na-Na.

    • flugaloo

I will not say them here, nor there. I will not say them anywhere.
I will not say those words, you twit. I will not, will not say “NUUUUUURH! UUEEERRH! UEERH!”

  • Antonio Reboiro

I haven’t watched all of them on WWE Network, but I suppose they have the DVD version and not the live one, right?

    • MaffewOfBotchamania

    • Senor Pene

also the crowd is even fixed, so there’s nothing left to enjoy.

  • CS 22

    I love you Mickie James.

  • cesar

yay Muse 🙂 you should use their new song Psycho when you show a botch of Sid :p

  • Gustavo

That Mickie vs Trish finish… And yet it still looks better than what we are going to see on Sunday.

  • ColeYote

I’ll give a dishonourable mention to Hulk vs Yoko at WM9. That match *happening* was a botch.

  • Catherine Bouey

I didn’t know Maffew was taking flack for putting in matches we’re someone gets concussed… soon one forgets R-Truth concussing the hell out of Ted Dibiase with a slap.

    • MychaelDarklighter

      He is..? From whom..?
I admit I turn my head whenever they show the Brock shooting star botch. I watched it happen live and I’ve never been able to watch it again. Anyone other than Brock would have been paralysed or killed in that moment.

  • Catherine Bouey

“In Titan Sinking, Bret Hart called the Backlund match his worst singles PPV match ever”.

    Considering Survivor Series 97, Starrcade 99, & Wrestlemania 26

Hindsight is a bitch isn’t it?

  • MychaelDarklighter

I don’t mind them editing out botches for the home video, if they’re minor mistakes and if it’s edited smoothly. Particularly for a finish and particularly at WM.
Hah, I remember adoring Mickey James and her ‘obsessed Trish fan’ angle, but thinking that Mickey licking her hand was a bit much. They did go a bit over-the-top sometimes in that era.

The worst one is the Brock botch. Not only because he was hurt so bad, but because he obviously had to retire his shooting star press after that. It is of course understandable, but I’d seen him do it in OVW before he made it to WWE, and of course was amazed. I was waiting for it all along that first run of his on the main roster, and it was so smart and cool to save it for ‘Mania, but the moment he scaled the turnbuckle I was like “No! It’s way too far, don’t do it!” You can see him realise this and hesitate a bit, which likely didn’t help either.
I suppose what can you do though? Obviously you can’t climb back down to reposition Kurt, or hit another move first. The impact would have been diluted. Just wish it hadn’t gone down that way.
They still show it as a ‘highlight’ in the WM promo packages, like “Look what Brock can do!”, but I can never ever forget that he almost necked himself doing it, so it doesn’t come off as impressive or awesome for me when it’s shown.

    • BDSPEAn

That Mickey thing was her own improvisation.Vince was pissed backstage

      • MychaelDarklighter

Really? Seems like the kind of thing that fit right in during that era. Maybe the fact that it was Wrestlemania had some effect on Vince’s feelings.
It’s really funny to think of Mickey improvising that, tho. Well done, gel.

        • BDSPEAn

She was kinda startled by Vince’s reaction too. It’s difficult to fully comprehend Vince’s mood, but I kind of get the notion that his original intention was to always produce family-friendly TV. Now he did have go the complete other route when competition came up and he was scratching and clawing for survival, but he always liked to have a pre-ordained idea of what type of risque content would be televised. He was pissed when Austin started bleeding in WM 13, and while he appreciated Foley’s guts after he jumped from top of the cell onto the commentary table, he made him promise never to do it again.

  • Tomtown007 .

Old Intro back? Great vid as always mat

  • Austin

“Warrior vs Rude finish with Sherri”?

    • Catherine Bouey

Meaning WWE repeated the spot with different people involved.

  • Steven A

Pipper didn’t screw Bob, Bob screwed Bob.

  • L

Oh if you have an updated most botched matches be sure to add the one where Drew Mcintyre in his chosen one persona lost to a drop kick by kane, lol.

  • Invader Zim

    Zim likes this list Maffew.

  • Anon

What’s the name of the song at the Dishonorable Mentions section? Anyone know?

  • stingersplash .

Who is Chris Jercho? Maffew botch 😉

  • MoKopstick

Even though it wasn’t part of an actual match, you CAN’T FORGET Michael Cole giving away the result to the WM15 event at Wrestlemania saying “After the show don’t forget the call the WWF hotline where we will have exclusive comments from the new WWF champion!”

  • Hawlucha

Rock/Hogan’s match ended with a botch (People’s Elbow not even making contact with Hogan’s )chest.
