What is it?

Aiming to do for the Pokémon anime what Botchamania has done so far for wrestling (good luck with that, everything post-Kanto), Methusael86 has so far turned a niche concept of a niche concept into a so-far entertaining idea. The Pokémon anime, either as a result of poor translation, animating or just the usual care and attention one expects Nintendo to give to something the UK enjoys, there’s an abundance of errors, banned episodes and dodgyness to ensure this idea has longevity. Wrong names, seizures, guns pointed at people, perverse older men and James from Team Rocket with fake breasts ensure there’s plenty for everybody.

Pokémon’s fanbase is similar to that of wrestling, in that the older fans remember when it was fun and the new ones enjoy the music and the thought of capturing 150 amazing Pokémon and another hundred or so crap ones. The videos are edited at the right pace as to not bore newcomers and also not to insult the intelligence of those that know the series inside and out. Borrowing a few segments from Botchamania helps the flow of things but also means he has to borrow that other Botchamania trademark: copyright infringement. As a result, the name has changed from Pokébotchamania to Pokémania (and er, back again) to avoid the YouTube police, like a man avoiding sniper fire by zig-zagging wildly.

Should I watch it if I don’t like Pokémon?

Only if your love for seizures covers your dislike for Pokémon.

Any criticisms?

Although the criticisms on 4Kids Entertainment’s treatment of anime are valid, they’re as fun to listen to as a Philadelphia wrestling crowd.
